These may include measurements of daytime sleepiness using questionnaires like the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, imaging studies to assess airway anatomy, or tests to evaluate cardiovascular health.

Preventing Sleep Apnea & Its Symptoms

Excess weight, particularly around the neck and throat area, can contribute to the narrowing of the airway, increasing the risk of OSA. Therefore, maintaining a healthy weight through proper diet and regular exercise can help reduce the severity of symptoms. 

In 2022, researchers found that even just a 5% reduction in weight improved sleep apnea symptoms in patients, and a 10% reduction had an even more significant impact. 

Regular physical activity can have multiple benefits for individuals with sleep apnea and even help prevent it. 

Exercise helps to strengthen the muscles in the throat and improve overall muscle tone, which can help prevent airway collapse during sleep. Additionally, it promotes weight loss and reduces stress, both of which are important factors in managing OSA symptoms.

Alcohol relaxes the muscles in the throat, making it more likely for the airway to collapse during sleep and exacerbating OSA symptoms. By minimizing or avoiding alcohol, particularly in the hours leading up to bedtime, individuals can reduce the frequency and severity of breathing pauses and improve their sleep quality. 

Sleeping on your back can worsen sleep apnea symptoms by allowing the tongue and soft tissues in the throat to collapse backward, obstructing the airway. Conversely, sleeping on your side can help keep the airway open and reduce the frequency of breathing pauses during sleep. 

Smoke can irritate the airway, increase inflammation, and lead to fluid retention, all of which can contribute to airway narrowing and obstruction in individuals with sleep apnea. Quitting smoking can help improve airflow and reduce inflammation in the airway, minimizing sleep apnea symptoms over time. 

Treating OSA

As previously mentioned, there is no cure for sleep apnea. However, patients with OSA can use certain methods to minimize their symptoms and reduce their risk of further health complications.

Breathing Devices

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is the most common and effective treatment for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. 

CPAP devices deliver a steady stream of air through a mask worn over the nose or both nose and mouth during sleep. This air pressure helps to keep the airway open, preventing breathing pauses and snoring. 

Some individuals may use bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machines instead. These deliver varying levels of pressure during inhalation and exhalation. 

Oral Appliances

Also known as mandibular advancement devices (MADs) or mandibular repositioning devices (MRDs), these oral appliances are custom-made to be worn during sleep. They work by repositioning the lower jaw slightly forward, which helps to keep the airway open and prevent obstruction. 

Oral appliances are often recommended for individuals with mild to moderate OSA or those who cannot tolerate CPAP therapy. They are comfortable, easy to use, and portable, making them a convenient alternative for some patients.

Oral Facial Therapy 

This style of therapy involves a combination of lifestyle modifications, exercises, and techniques aimed at improving airway function and reducing the severity of obstructive sleep apnea. This may include…
